Babies Minds

Abstract: How do babies and very young children perceive the world around them? Do infants employ mental representations in the same fashion as adults? How can we tell? This short video introduces two theories, by developmental psychologists Piaget and Klein, which attempt to answer these questions. They offer fascinating insights into the inner workings of young minds, a world not of permanent objects, but of fleeting impressions, of part objects each with some strong emotional attachment, but which simply cease to exist when out of view. Undoubtably, these theories offer important clues for AI researchers struggling to recreate mental behaviour in machines.
