Open Discussion meeting on

Animal Intelligence?

Animals certainly display astonishing patterns of behaviour. Some birds migrate from the artic to the antartic, each year returning to exactly the same nest. On returning to the hive, honeybees are known to communicate the location of flowers to their fellow workers. Chimpanzees are said to be able to use some 30 facial expressions to convey different emotions. Some monkeys use stones as tools to crack open nuts, while others have been taught to use sign language. One gorilla learned over 100 different words and was reportedly able to use them to construct meaningful sentences.

These are impressive feats, but are animals really intelligent? Is non-human intelligence a possibility or is intelligence something unique to man? This weeks discussion will explore these issues and their relation to the question of constructing artificial intelligences.
