This system implements a method to generate caustics effect on surfaces, by using photon mapping. In the first pass, photon map is generated by using a light path tracing method. The photons are stored at the points where they hit a surface. In the second pass, the scene is rendered using ray tracing which provides global illumination, specular reflections and direct illumination. Additionally the photon map data is used in ray tracer to render the caustics effect. Storage structure for the photons is a discrete structure, in which photons that hit to a certain range in the scene are contained as they are hit in one point and rendered accordingly. This provides faster photon map construction time but it decreases quality of the caustics effect created. Although, using photons that are stored in a certain radius to calculate the photon intensity at a point increases definition and the quality of the effect.
