Cloud computing has attracted significant attention due to increasing resource and availability demands of recent applications. It is common for cloud providers to have datacenters with thousands of computers -each one running several virtual machines- in order to provide certain types of services: SaaS (software as a service), PaaS (platform as a service) and IaaS (infrastructure as a service). However, running a datacenter has its own operational costs thereby making energy-efficiency, communication-efficiency and utilization crucial for service providers. In our research, we are trying to decrease operational costs of datacenters by means of traffic and energy-aware virtual machine (VM) placement, VM migration and VM consolidation.
