Virtual crowds appear in many application areas of computer graphics today such as games, movies, and training simulations. Creating realistic virtual crowds consisting of autonomous agents that display different behavioral characteristics is a challenge in crowd simulation. Our work is based on the intuition that modelling inter-agent communication can improve the realism of the behaviors for both individual agents and the overall crowd. Our goal is to investigate the dynamics of information exchange in crowds and how communication influences crowd behavior by constructing an agent-based real-time virtual crowd simulation framework in which a communication model for autonomous agents is established. In the process of constructing such a communication model, this seminar summarizes our research in the areas of virtual crowd simulation and communication. Issues related to development of the simulation framework and communication model will be discussed and some preliminary results will be provided.
