CS492 - Senior Project

General

All senior students are required to undertake a project during their final year. Projects are directed towards the solution of a real and substantial problem. They provide a unique opportunity for the student to develop and demonstrate powers of initiative and independent thought. Students must show an ability to solve realistic practical and theoretical problems, and to communicate the results in both written and oral form.

Important: Students will normally register for CS492 in the Spring semester of their final year, however, they are expected to start their project in the Fall semester and to have done a substantial amount of work prior to the official start. CS492 is thus a two semester project. Irregular students (those who wish to complete CS492 in the Fall semester) must begin project work the previous Spring semester. Failure to do this will delay graduation! If you intend to take the course on an irregular basis, you must inform the Senior Projects Coordinator beforehand and arrange to submit reports accordingly.

Course Organisation

Projects are undertaken in cooperation with a faculty member. Each faculty member will offer a number of projects and students are free to select one which interests them. The project selection phase ends with a written statement (Proposal) which gives a brief outline of the work to be undertaken, and is countersigned by both student and faculty member. Two written reports are required, a Progress Report towards the end of the first semester's work and a Final Report at the end of the second semester. Students are also required to give an oral presentation of their work and may optionally demonstrate the final software product if there is one.

Students are advised to meet the supervising faculty member on a regular basis to ensure that the work is progressing satisfactorily. Further details of requirements, grading, etc., together with information about the form and content of the various reports are contained in "CS492 Senior Projects - Guidelines," printed copies of which are available from the department secretary (Room: EA518) or the course coordinator (see below.)
