MORE DEMOCRATIC VOTING

Does the Present Voting System Reflect Voter's Party Preferences?

by Dr. Erdinc Sayan, Dept. of Philosophy, METU

Abstract: In this country, as in most other countries, every voter can vote only for a single party in an election. Is this apparently innocent one-voter/one-vote principle a fair and democratic way of voicing our political party preferences? Are there more democratic and at the same time feasible voting systems giving voters the opportunity to express not only their support but also their dislike for parties? At this juncture in Turkish politics this is an issue that needs to be urgently considered. If you want more democracy {or, fairer voter representation} for your money, this is a talk you don't want to miss.
